When high school students learn Math, they have to be able to see and communicate their logic and reasoning to the teacher, and the class as a whole, to create mathematically sound discussions. In today's society students have to be able to use technology in and outside of the classroom in order to be a success in years after high school. The resource I am requesting is a TI-Presenter, which is a video interface for TI viewscreen calculators. It will allow my students and myself to hook our calculators up to TVs, VCRs, projectors, and other video devices to better communicate our explorations and findings to the class. This would create a strong, mathematically sound classroom environment for open discussions and critiques of student work and findings. I teach Mathematics at Carolina High School in South Carolina. Our school is an inner city school that currently has approximately 69% of its students on free and reduced lunch. We were unsatisfactory on our last Report Card and are looking to aggresively improve our math scores. Due to our population it is extremely important for teachers at our school to use hands on approaches whenever possible to engage the student's interest. The TI-Presenter is a one-time cost that will affect all of the 150 students that I teach, plus all of the students that I work with in our before and after school tutoring programs. Furthermore, it is something that can be used year after year in order to have students express their mathematical explorations, thoughts, and findings to the class and the teacher. There is no telling how many students this could fully affect in the end. And all that we need to do this is one TI-Presenter; we have the calculators, TVs, and projectors: we just need something to bring them all together. Our students are very vocal and this tool will help them better communicate mathematically. Right now, a student can not share their results with other students or the class as a whole from one small calculator screen. With the TI-Presenter we can put it up for the whole class to discuss and explore. What a great thing: students aggressively talking and exploring mathematics.
