Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The world has been deeply impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the massive toll that it has taken on our society, and especially our children, has been unsettling. Even though our school doors are closed for an indefinite period of time, school is in session, our computers are on, and we are practicing science from our respective homes together, through Zoom. My students are a very diverse group that comes from a wide socioeconomic and ethnically diversified background from Los Angeles's Westside. I teach everything from highly accelerated students to students with special needs.

But all students deserve meaningful opportunities for hands-on learning.

All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources and tools, so that all learners can access the curriculum. So, in our virtual science world, I have to come up with different ways to reach my students to spark their scientific connection and critical thinking through electrifying labs and demonstrations. For many of my students, Science is their favorite class because it’s actually "hands on." They are bright and eager to learn, and recently I even had a student tell me she wanted to be an astrophysicist.

My Project

All good teaching requires using multiple strategies, resources and tools, so that all learners can access the curriculum. As we delve into the Next Generation Science Standards, students need more hands-on inquiry and creating models based on observations of phenomena. This kit is perfect for that. Because the NGSS all start with a phenomenon, I will use the upside down glasses to demonstrate how light can be manipulated. The students will have great fun experiencing a new perspective of light while they are challenged to complete various activities.

This lab will spark the minds of the students, thereby pulling their interest and inquisitive mindset into the light unit, which they will engage in virtually, and then in person - when it's safe to do so.

Having come out of studying the units of electricity and magnetism, this lab will then unify both as we learn about the components of the field of electromagnetism. Students will learn about how light travels through air; the working principle of pinhole camera; the law of reflection and refraction, images formed by plane mirrors and lens, color and lights, and ultimately, the electromagnetic spectrum. Through this scaffolding process of linear investigation students will intuitively obtain higher order thinking skills and connect what is happening in their homes to the classroom, and to the world around them.
