My Students

Our school is located in a small rural school district in southwest Ohio. We are housed in a building that is almost 100 years old. Some of my students are learning in the same classrooms that their parents and grandparents did, which is part of what makes our school a comfortable place for families to gather.

I am grateful to have the opportunity to teach a STEM course that involves problem-solving​, building, and design.

I am also the STEM advisor, and I am always looking for new ways to engage my students in STEM principles both in and out of the classroom for creativity and innovative thinking.

My Project

After reading about Mrs. Russ and her project "Doing what scientists do: This is what scientists look like, we were inspired to request tools that a scientist would use to study the earth. We would use resources from the If/This collection Restoring a coastal wetland and Allison Fundis as she shares about ocean research.

We would take our research into our own schoolyard and search for signs of life we could further explore under a microscope as we study biotic and abiotic factors that shape our local ecosystem.

We would also collect weather data to examine how climate change might play a role in what we are able to see. To do this we are requesting a microscope, a weather instrument and a usb interface to connect to our computer to keep a record of our research findings.

I see scientists in my STEM classroom everyday in the curiosity and questions my students come up with as they work as citizen scientists.
