Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the excitement of yearbook day? Waiting in line to pick up your long-awaited copy, seeking out friends' signatures, looking for your own face amongst the pages? We are beginning our first yearbook project in 10 years, but are missing the key element - cameras!
We are a high-poverty, urban high school in Texas.
My journalism class is the first of its kind at our school, and we are creating the first ever student-run yearbook. My students are eager to begin taking photos, but unfortunately we have no cameras. Only 2 of my students have their own digital cameras, but 2 people cannot run a yearbook! Through the yearbook program, the students will gain photography, technology, and leadership skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
My Project
My students need 2 digital cameras to take pictures for the yearbook. At the moment, only students who own their own cameras are able to take pictures of events. As a result, there are only 2 students doing all the work for yearbook. With these additional cameras, I will be able to loan out cameras to students to photograph special events around the school.
This project will mean that all students can be involved in the yearbook process. All students will be able to experience the creativity involved in taking pictures and the excitement of seeing their photographs in print.
