My students need picture books read aloud every single day! This project is all about the power and importance of reading aloud high interest, engaging, perspective stretching texts, each and every day.
If you were able to visit my classroom you would observe 17 wonderfully unique children. I share my classroom with 9 girls and 8 boys. My students have a wide array of interests, talents, and hobbies.
I know I am supposed to get into the nitty-gritty details about how many of the students in our school are from low-income families or receive free or reduced price lunch, but the truth is, I feel that detracts from how incredible they are.
I don't want anyone to be clouded with negative thoughts or pity, I want them to be psyched about donating to a project regardless of where my students come from. Let's instead dream about where they are going!
My Project
Reading aloud to children is beneficial on so many levels. Students have the opportunity to hear fluent reading, they learn how expression and inflection bring a story to life. Students are exposed to various genres, styles, authors, topics, time periods, lifestyles, locations, and more! Students will begin to internalize that reading is special, they will feel safe, excited, and curious. Students that struggle with reading will feel comfort in returning to a picture book they are familiar with. I read aloud from a novel every afternoon following recess. What I have been pushing myself to do more is carve out the time to read a picture book each day, because the experiences are different, yet equally important.
The books I have selected for this project will be blended in with the picture books already in my classroom library, further diversifying and revitalizing the collection.
These books will be read and read and read! I will read them, other teachers will be welcome to share them, and students will come back to them time and time again.
Please consider donating to this project, in return I will vow to complete the Classroom Book a Day Challenge with my incoming students. And we will love it!
