Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school serves a high number of socially and economically disadvantaged students. Most of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch at school. My fifth grade class is very diverse in their academics. They range from far below basic to advanced levels. Some are students with special needs and accommodations and others are students who need enrichment. Some are English language learners while others are fluent in the English language. They are all eager for an education; however, the lack of resources prevents them from getting motivated and truly showcasing their talents.
Many of my students have a variety of hardships at home, but at school, I try to make it a positive place where they can grow, learn, and be successful.
They come to school with big dreams, and I want to provide the best learning environment for them.
My Project
These grade level core literature books (Freak the Mighty, Esperanza Rising, Blood on the River) will replace worn out ones that have been used many times before by previous students. Max the Mighty is a sequel to Freak the Mighty. Since they really enjoyed that book, I would like to incorporate this novel to inspire them to continue reading.
Students deserve new, rich and intriguing stories that they can relate to and are fun to read.
All of these books have protagonists who are similar in age to my fifth grade students. This will facilitate and support their reading comprehension skills. Students will be able to make personal connections, compare and contrast, and think critically of specific situations and/or events that happen in the story.
