My students need a large CD player and 5 CDs of relaxation music.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. C.'s classroom raised $166

Tap, tap, tap. All day long, I hear feet and pencils tapping different rhythms. It’s a feeling that’s hard to contain. My third graders have music running through their veins. The two periods of music instruction they receive each week are not enough to satisfy their musical tendencies.
Over 80 percent of the students in my school in Brooklyn, New York, receive free or reduced lunch. Currently, our classroom has a broken CD players and computers that do not work. I want to provide my students with quiet music during their relaxation times. The amount of time spent reading independently is one of the highest indicators of success in school. By providing my students with quiet music, they will be able to sustain their focus for longer periods of time while reading independently. The CD player will be used everyday during independent reading and at other times throughout the day when students are working quietly.
In addition to a CD player, I am also requesting 5 CDs of relaxation music from around the globe. This music will help expose my students to music from around the world, while providing them with the tools they need to relax and read calmly. Classical music CDs have been shown to stimulate logical, orderly and critical thinking skills in children. They have also been found to relax hyperactive children, helping students to focus better in the classroom. This is so important since independent reading falls at the end of the school day, which for third graders, has been filled with challenging work.
The CD player will also be used in our listening center so students can listen to the books we are reading and supplemental texts on CD. This is especially useful for my lower level learners and English language learners who have difficulty accessing texts on grade level. Through the listening center, they can learn from and enjoy the same books the rest of the students are reading.
You can help my students maximize their time-spent reading, while developing their ear for music.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
