My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books that capture their imaginations, but they have also not met Roald Dahl!

I teach 13 year old students with autism spectrum disorders.

Our school only serves students with special needs in a low-income neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY. My students are wonderful kids! They are high functioning and really love learning. They sometimes amaze me by how fast they learn what I have taught them. I continually tell them how smart they are and encourage them with high fives through out the day.

My Project

I teach children with autism spectrum disorders. Most of them are high functioning and are able to do the same academics as their general education peers. I want my students to continue to succeed and progress and I know I can help them do this through improved reading comprehension. I also want reading to be fun for them. Many students with autism spectrum disorders do not take part in imaginative play and take things very literally. I would like to introduce them to Roald Dahl books. His books help kids expand their imagination, which is something I have observed that my students have trouble with. A bean bag chair in the classroom will help my students to get physically comfortable with reading. Roald Dahl books will help them expand their imagination, but most importantly help them achieve their goal of improved reading comprehension. I know my kids will enjoy relaxing on the bean bag while listening and reading along to such a great children's book author.

Receiving these materials are very important to me because I am passionate about helping my students achieve their personal goals.

I believe this Roald Dahl is the perfect set because it addresses the needs of all of my students. I have students who can read independently while listening to the CD and I have students who are learning to read. Those who are learning will still have the opportunity to listen to the book as they learn to read. All students will benefit.
