Ms. Brown from Saint Louis MO is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 8 copies each of 4 books to become independent readers and improve their reading skills.

"The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" Dr. Suess said. Throughout this year, my students have become committed to this idea of reading to gain knowledge in order to achieve big goals in their future.
With a dropout rate of 46.3%, my Senior English students have proven that with only a semester left until graduation, they have defied the odds and are capable of overcoming unimaginably challenging obstacles.
With many of my students starting the year reading on a fifth and sixth grade reading level, I have worked to not only provide my students with the tools to tackle texts that initially seem too difficult, but to also challenge them to become critical thinkers about literature and how it relates to their lives and the world around them.
As a result, I am attempting to give my students the opportunity to prove how much they have learned through literature circles. By having access to different books, my students will have the opportunity to not only choose a book that they are interested in, but to discuss the issues, conflicts, and characters in their book with their classmates who share the same interests as them. These literature circles will provide my students with one last chance before they graduate to grow as readers and to learn to love reading.
In my high school, our average ACT score (15) is in the 14th percentile nationally.
Providing my students with books that they are excited about reading will further invest them in their education, help them think of themselves as readers, and guide them to becoming critical thinkers about themselves and the world around them so that they can graduate and positively contribute to the world.
