My students need a Spanish-English carpet to be able to relax and read in the literacy center to improve their independent reading levels throughout the school year.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are 3rd and 4th grade diverse learners. Not only do they have special needs, but many of them are learning English as a second language. We incorporate independent reading on a daily basis. I would love to have a place in the classroom where students can read and be inspired!
Durkin Park is a low-income school located on the Southwest side of Chicago.
Most of my students have special needs such as specific learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Some of my students are also learning English as a second language. Most of my students struggle with oral fluency and reading comprehension. Vocabulary is also a weakness, especially with the English language learners. Many of them will code switch, meaning they will translate the word from English to Spanish and then try to understand the meaning. A majority of our student's parents do not speak English at home. Therefore, much of the instruction takes place at school with limited support at home.
My Project
My vision is a literacy corner. I would like to create a corner of the classroom into an area where students can relax and read during the school day with a new Spanish-English carpet. The books in the literacy corner will be of various genres, with strong emphasis on non-fiction books.
Donations to this project will help increase the student's independent reading levels which will in turn increase their test scores.
I also hope that it will encourage the students to be life long readers.
