Durkin Park is a low-income school located on the Southwest side of Chicago. Most of my students have special needs such as specific learning disabilities and/or ADHD. Some of my students are also learning English as a second language. Most of my students struggle with oral fluency and reading comprehension. Vocabulary is also a weakness, especially with the English language learners. Many of them will code switch, meaning they will translate the word from English to Spanish and then try to understand the meaning. A majority of our student's parents do not speak English at home. Therefore, much of the instruction takes place at school with limited support at home.
