Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Many of my students enter middle school having never read a chapter book, and never discovered a book that truly captures their imagination.
My students are sixth graders at an inner city school in a major city in Texas.
More than 89% of the students at the school qualify for free and reduced price lunch. The high school that my students will attend has a graduation rate of 36%. While many people would hear these numbers and give up hope, these numbers drive me and my students forward each day to work harder and beat these odds. My students come to school each day ready to work hard and learn. Each day, my students bring that extra degree of effort to the classroom and are achieving things they never thought possible!
My Project
Because of an emphasis on standardized tests, many of my students have never read a chapter book. Instead they have read endless short stories and passages. Most of these passages lack a fully developed plot, causing them to be dull and boring to many students. This turns students away from reading, and many of them have not yet discovered the power of a good book. Introducing novels to my students will allow them to expand their imaginations and discover all that reading has to offer while still practicing the skills necessary to pass the state tests. Additionally, I am requesting "blank books" for my students to publish their own written work in a unique way. It will allow my students to expand their creativity while writing and encourage creative expression.
Opening up the world of literature to my students will have a life changing impact on them by turning them into lifelong book lovers.
It will give my students a new appreciation for reading, and allow them to master reading skills while enjoying what they are reading.
