My students need 2 Chromebooks to allow for a center in our classroom. Center time allows me to work with students independently or in small groups to reach struggling students.
My building sits in rural Ashtabula County. This year I expect to have 26 third graders. Roughly one third of them will be identified as at-risk for making the third grade guarantee in Ohio. Their work ethic, desire to learn, and to show what they know on assessments is admirable. These are 8 year olds who are eager to work and learn.
Approximately 2/3 of my students will come from a lower income home where access to technology may be limited.
These same students are tested on Chromebooks for Ohio’s Third grade guarantee.
My Project
My students must develop excellent typing and keyboard skills to take and pass our online State testing. Having a small group of Chromebooks in my room will allow students much more access to practice these skills. In addition, they can use these skills while working with a self determined lesson set through iready learning. It’s a winning plan for my third graders to have daily access to a Chromebooks for an individualized lesson in math or reading as well as computer keyboard navigation skills. The reality is that not all the students coming into third grade have the experience with scrolling through passages to reread or to look for evidence from the selections they need to use in their answers. Simple skills like these are essential to completing and doing well on our state assessments.
