Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach drama and special education at a public middle school in Queens. I absolutely adore my students and my job. The one element that makes instruction difficult is that we have very limited supplies. Currently my students are working on a production of "Guys and Dolls," but we lack basic character shoes that we vitally need to learn the choreography.
My students have had very little exposure to dance or musical theater. Children, especially special-education students, need to have dance instruction in their lives in order to provide an outlet to express themselves creatively. Moreover, most of the students have never been in a production before, and having a beautiful costume is very important to them. We have only had one other show in our school, and so we have no costume collection. Having a costume closet to use for shows and in the classroom would be a valuable asset to our school, and having the appropriate shoes would be help us get one step closer to that dream.
The other costume element that would really enhance our show is a hat and necktie collection. Because our show is set in the 1940s, it is important to have authentic costume pieces so that the students can learn more about the era and get into their characters. I have included several hats and ties that I know will help complete our show! The hats and ties are an integral part of the choreography, so we need to costume the students from head to toe!
On behalf of my students, thank you very much for your time and consideration!
