This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students love science, math, and art and I try to make their lessons exciting by bringing these lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the STEAM curriculum. I hope this project will help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields.

My students are wonderful second graders.

Our school is located in a high poverty immigrant community in California. The parents of most of my students have never finished high school and my students will hopefully be the first ones in their families to go to college. My classroom consists primarily of students who are learning English as a second language. I also mainstream learning disabled students in my all inclusive classroom. In addition, I partner for enrichment activities with a 3rd grade class and a class of deaf and hard of hearing students who will also participate in this project.

My Project

The Kinetic Sand kits and the math materials will expose my students and their 3rd grade buddies to real world science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities that will enable my students to really experience science and math in new and exciting ways as they discover the unique STEAM activities that can be used with Kinetic Sand.

My students will be able to use the different Kinetic Sand kits to do a variety of STEAM activities.

One of the math and engineering activities will be for me to read the two books about building sand castles and then encourage my students and their buddies to work in small groups to design and build their own sand castles. This will allow my students to practice working cooperatively, solve problems together, and use communication skills to share ideas. The next step will be to use the math tools to measure the height, length, and width of the sand castles.

The science activities include learning about the different animal and dinosaur figures included in the kits and using the dinosaur skeletons to create several dinosaur digs for the groups to excavate.

My students love science! I try to make my science lessons exciting by bringing their science lessons to life so all students can be exposed to the science curriculum. Most of my students have never been exposed to these interesting STEAM activities. I want my students to be able to see and do these exciting activities. I hope this project will help inspire my students' imagination and positively influence many of these students to stay in school and pursue careers in the STEAM fields
