Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is like the United Nations. You hear a variety of languages. My students are eager to learn and need assistance in mastering the English language.
My classroom consists of 30-32 ready to learn, English Language Learners.
The minute they walk into my classroom, they are ready to learn. All of my students come from various countries and throughout the school year, they are either, entering or leaving the country. They come from hardworking families living in a poverty stricken area in Brooklyn, NY.
My school is doing all that it can to accommodate students, but due to budget cuts, we are really in need of practice materials. My English as a Second Language students require extra materials that can assist them with learning the English language and helping them to do well on the State exams.
My Project
All of my students have different needs and I want to do my best to accommodate them. I have students who are reading 1-3 levels below grade and others who are on level. These materials will allow me to group them according to their levels, but also allowing all of them to focus on the same topic. At times they will be able to work with advanced students who may be able to help them.
Some of the materials focus on learning new vocabulary words, correcting sentences (which is great for my beginner ESL students), comprehension skills (which is great for my advanced students), and working on writing (which is excellent for all of my students). I am also requesting math materials, which delve into the deeper meaning/understanding of math word problems. The math journals focus on the Common Core standards. All of these materials prepare my students to critically think.
This is also work that will not be graded. This is for my students to practice skills learned during the year.
This project will make such a huge difference in my class because it will allow my students to work independently or in small groups.
They will see where they need help or see what skills they have mastered. My students will be able to practice their skills daily, which will help them to do well on their State exams.
