My Students
Many students are familiar with the "ABC" song, but can they visually identify the letters or their correct sounds?
I teach kindergarten at a large school with over 900 students in grades pre-k through 5.
Our students come from a variety of backgrounds. We have a large special needs population. We also have students who speak English as a second language. As a kindergarten teacher, I have the joy of being a part of my students' earliest school experiences and helping these curious and enthusiastic children become independent learners.
My Project
An essential part of learning to read is being able to distinguish one letter from another and learning the sounds associated with those letters. This interactive listening center will allow students to clearly hear each letter sound as they use picture clues to visually identify the corresponding letters. Not only will the students be associating letters and sounds, but the center will help them to begin identifying individual sounds within words; identifying the sound at the beginning of a word and the sound at the end of a word. Being able to segment the individual sounds within words will be an important skill as students begin sounding out and spelling words.
What I love about this interactive center is that students will be able to receive reinforcement of what is being taught even as they are working independently.
The center will engage students with pictures, simple step-by-step instructions, fun music, and dry erase boards that will allow them to be interactive and practice writing letters. Children enjoy being able to do things on their own and with this center they will begin to do just that while still having the guidance of the center.
