My students need a copy of the book, The Bitter Side of Sweet.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Jordan's classroom raised $480
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students encompass a broad range of ethnic groups. I have four students from Somalia, one from China, another from a refugee camp in Northern Africa. My classroom has students that come from low income households, as well as others from middle class homes.
These students work well when they are given the opportunity to extend their reading assignments into something hands-on.
My students are special because they all become engaged when they are asked to "do" something for others. They are protective of their younger reading buddies and take a stand when a wrong to another student has taken place.
My Project
We will read the book, The Bitter Side of Sweet, by Tara Sullivan and I want to incorporate the book into my Social Studies unit on geography. Globes will be made by the students to help identify where the story takes place.
I want to have the students read and learn about social problems that exist in the world while reading the book.
I want them to take a stand and carry their protective ways with others in the world that are being enslaved. After reading the book, students will create posters to share with others about child slavery. My students will create Powerpoints to share with other students. This project will be cover three Language standards. While reading the book, students will cover three other Literature standards. Next, the students will cover one speaking and listening standard by sharing their project with others. Finally, students will have the chance to become teen/youth advocates themselves. They will take part in helping to make the world a safer place.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
