Do you remember not being able to wait for a break at school to dive back into an awesome book that you just couldn't put down? That is exactly the feeling that I want my students to have. Having these books close by their side will encourage them to read more often.
My students are from an urban, high poverty district just outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
Many of my students have basic needs that are not met at home. Many enjoy school for its free lunch and breakfast, caring teachers, and fun learning materials. There is not much motivation for these students to succeed and many of them are performing well below grade level, especially in reading and math. Although they may struggle to read, it is important to encourage them to read as much as possibles tarting at an early age. By giving them a choice in what and when they would like to read, it will help them to enjoy reading and cause them to read more often. Giving them their own special storage place for their library books will make reading an even more engaging experience.
Each child will have a seat sack hanging from their chair. In this sack they will be able to store books from our school library and our classroom library. That means their books will be readily available for them to read when they finish an assignment, during read to self time, and during indoor recess (yes, many of them enjoy reading books during recess!) Also, our class participates in the Daily Five. This is a time of the day where students work in different literacy centers. One of the most important components in the read to self component. Students are encouraged to build their reading stamina and read for at least 20 minutes a day to themselves. These seat sacks will help them to keep their books organized that they they can continuously be reading throughout read to self time.
This project will not only help this year's students to love reading but these materials will be passed on through the many years of my teaching.
Students will be so thrilled to have their favorite books hanging from their chair within arm's reach. Giving them the opportunity to choose and organize their own books will encourage more reading which is much needed in a school where many students are reading below grade level. Please consider helping to raise their reading levels.
