Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In this age of video games and instant feedback, ALL our children need to learn and experience the joy of reading daily.

My bilingual students are first graders from Puerto Rico, Honduras, El Salvador, Mexico and Colombia.

They are bright, curious, inquisitive children who are learning the importance of being bilingual and bi-literate. My school is the largest elementary school in an urban district. Because of budget constraints, my students do not have access to many materials that are common in suburban schools.

My Project

I encourage my students to develop a deep love of reading. Every day we have time where students are engaged in reading silently or with a friend. Through the generosity of many, we were able to get a carpet for our library center. However, our library is organized using various dollar bins and milk crates. I want to create an inviting, comfortable space where my students can easily access books, and enjoy reading. The book bins will help organize the books by topic in an inviting way. The extra bookcase will replace my make-shift bookcase made from 9 milk crates. Every day we spend time getting to know new authors, characters and stories. I hope that by spending time in this newly organized library and reading daily my students will learn to love reading, improve their reading skills, and continue to increase their skills in both English and Spanish.

As children's author Kate DiCamillo said, "Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty.

It should be offered to them as a precious gift." I hope that by spending time reading in an appealing inviting environment, my students can learn to love reading in Spanish and English every day, use their imaginations, and develop new vocabulary. These skills will lead to life-long literacy.
