Remember carpet time in elementary school? My students love carpet time, but we need a huge improvement. Imagine not being able to see the whole easel because you are sitting in the back or supplies are falling off because parts are broken. This is something my kindergartners have to deal with daily.
Our 100 year old public school building houses a very diverse student population in terms of race, language, and socioeconomic background.
Our district has spent the last few years lowering our budget more and more. The wonderful community surrounding our school does what it can, but they cannot do everything. I inherited my classroom over two years ago and while I have done everything I can to make the best possible learning environment for my students there are still some things that need to be done in order to reach all of my students. I have a very engaged group of students and they love to learn; however, sometimes they are taken out of the moment due to the outdated and insufficient materials, like our easel, that I am using to teach them.
A new and better easel will bring student learning to a new level in my classroom. We start each day with our morning meeting. One component of our morning meeting is our shared reading activity. Each week, students learn a new poem that goes with our science and/or social studies theme. With our low to the ground easel, the students on the back half of the carpet are not able to see the whole easel/poem and are therefore, not getting the same learning experience. A new easel that would fit our needs would make sure that all students are given the same opportunity to learn without restrictions. We will use our new easel as the focus of our learning. Kindergarten students do the bulk of their learning on the easel. With this new and better easel, I will be able to make lessons more interactive, all students will be able to see everything because the easel stands taller, and all the different components to the easel will help me to reach all of my students and their learning needs.
Donations to this project with improve my classroom immensely.
With the hooks and different add-ons this easel has, I will be able to have all parts of my lesson at the ready when I start teaching. No more learning time will be lost hanging a chart because it will already be there. Myself and my students will not have to go and retrieve supplies because there is room for those too. It will change my students' lives for the better because everyone will be able to see and everything will be there.
