This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are highly motivated! They love learning and interacting socially with others. The excitement and anticipation are apparent in their faces each morning at the start of the school day. The students I serve are all Deaf or hard of hearing, ranging in age from 5 through 11 years. Because hearing loss impacts language learning, a foundational skill, all academic areas are impacted. Additional supports in the development of language are needed. 98 percent of our students live below the poverty line. The Pandemic has limited severely their learning access.
My Project
Interacting with storyboard pieces from targeted stories will provide my students the opportunity to have visual aids which they can manipulate while learning vocabulary and syntax both receptively and expressively. They will also be provided with the opportunity to engage in social interactions with peers during this time which will assist in the development of their pragmatic skills. The vocabulary and syntax skills learned will be foundational skills for additional learning across multiple domains, including both academic and social spheres.
The use of manipulative letters will provide students the opportunity to recreate words in printed form which are targeted in their literacy learning providing multimodal sensory input.
