My Students

A typical day in my classroom starts with high fives, hugs, and lots of smiles as we greet students getting off the bus. They come to school eager and ready to learn. Each student brings with him a unique style of learning and a desire to please. They need patience, guidance and support to learn.

Students in my classroom have moderate to severe learning and cognitive disabilities.

Some have fine motor skill difficulties which make it a struggle to hold a pencil and write. It is often difficult for them to sit still and attend to instruction. They need hands-on activities to encourage learning and engagement in learning. My school is exceptional in that I have 11 students in my classroom with this degree of need. Schools in my district practice inclusive practices and students with all abilities attend their home schools and receive instruction and support in the regular education classroom as well as the special education classroom. All students who are in my classroom are attending my school as their home school. Many other schools in the district only have 1 or 2 students with such significant learning needs. My students must master functional skills such as dressing and feeding themselves as well as academic skills such as reading and writing. Each day is a struggle.

My Project

The students are very eager to learn. However, they need materials adapted to their needs. I currently do not have curriculum items or hands-on materials at their learning levels to meet their needs. I spend hours upon hours creating materials for each and every student. Each student has different needs and requires different materials as well as a different approach to learning. The materials I am requesting would address many different learning needs for my students and they would provide curriculum resources to help my students learn and grow. I am requesting curriculum to help me teach each student the way he/she needs to learn and I am requesting materials they can work on individually (file folder activities) to demonstrate mastery and independent learning skills.

Donations to this project will help my students succeed and grow as learners.

This will also mean I can spend less time developing materials and more time with my students. The students will have many opportunities to feel successful and they will feel encouraged to want to continue to learn!
