Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from extremely diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds, many of which are immigrants, first generation Americans, and/or below the poverty line. They bring a variety of perspectives and histories to our classroom. Each class I teach has mix of students that are gifted, ELL, SPED, and anywhere in between. At our school, each student takes general music for three years, and also have the opportunity to take intro to guitar, rock ensemble, and chorus.
When my students come to my classroom, there's a huge mixture of musical backgrounds.
Many students have never played an instrument before, while others can play multiple! I as a teacher have the philosophy that if given the opportunity, any student, regardless of background, has the ability to succeed. With your help, these students will!
My Project
In our general music classes, we learn a variety of instruments, primarily focusing on piano, drums and guitar. Students use these instruments to master the music standards of playing complex rhythms, melodies, harmonies, composing, improvising, and especially ensemble playing.
Over the years, I've had countless students ask me if we can learn ukulele in music class.
My answer has always been the same: I'd love to, but we don't have any! But hopefully with your help, that can change. The advantages to using ukuleles are numerous:
-They're extremely portable
-Not too loud, so the whole class can play together
-All students can play them, regardless of their size (not always true with full-size guitars!)
-No picks, cables, amps, or additional accessories necessary
-Size of frets and strings makes it easier to learn chords and complex melodies
-Can prepare students to learn guitar and other string instruments
We're asking your help to buy a class-set of ukuleles. Your donation will go towards 30 high-quality instruments, complete with cases so we know they'll last for years to come. Any donation size helps and on behalf of myself and my students, we greatly appreciate your help in making sure we have the best educational opportunities possible.
