Help Us Learn Our ABCs and 123s!

My students need these materials to help them learn and retain our alphabet and number sense. Our school is located in a high poverty area. Our students come in without knowledge of most letters and numbers.

My Students

We are a diverse classroom of 26 Kindergarten students. We are a Title l school. Every child in my class receives a school breakfast and lunch 100% free of charge each day. Even though my students have faced adversity in their life, they come to school ready to learn each day. I could not ask for a better group of students to have in my classroom!

We love hands-on and movement-based learning!

Learning is something we love to do! Their favorite subjects are Language Arts and Science.

My Project

These materials will be used to build and implement new alphabet and number centers for my students. In our classroom currently, we lack these resources to have centers in our classroom. I will use these resources to start our day with a strong focus on these skills. The materials listed will engage students by allowing them to practice and learn with a hands-on "playing" approach.

We are a title 1 school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

I hope to make their favorite part of our school day our morning centers. At the beginning of the year they will be used to teach and recognize letters and numbers. Throughout the school year we can transition them to provide extra practice to what we have learned and to stimulate learning of new topics such as: letter sounds, sentence and word building for our alphabet center. Number recognition could turn into: sequence, missing numbers, and building and answering math problems.

A few specific center ideas are as follows:

The students would love the Alpha-Bots because of how hands-on this activity would be. The center would first be used for letter identification, then moved to sounds, and then to build cvc words.

The Magic Board Printing would be used to help students learn to write. These could also be used outside of the letter practice and incorporated into any writing activity as the year and student skills progress.

Fishing Counting center would be a great way to engage students in hands-on learning of number recognition. Students could later use this center to fish for answers to addition and subtraction problems.

Peg Number Boards would be a great way for students to visualize one-to-one correspondence while learning their numbers and counting along with the Lakeshore Counting Keys.
