This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are only 4 and 5 years old, however, they LOVE to read. We have not completed learning the alphabet yet, but I have a wonderful classroom full of readers! Some of my students have trouble saying their sight words, however, each and every one of them are readers! The reason why I call them readers is because they can look at a page in a book and tell exactly what is happening in the story. My students work hard to use the strategies I teach them every day. My students are from a small community in Bronx, New York and many of my students are not able to read at home due to their lack of books.

My Project

My students need emergent story books (Three Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, Corduroy, and Harry The Dirty Dog) to help them prepare for reading leveled books while still in the beginning stages of reading. We call these books our old favorites. These are our favorites because they have been read to the students so many times during read aloud time, and my students can retell them all by themselves. This builds confidence in readers at a young age and will encourage them to want to read and learn more about books.

Unfortunately, the only copies we have in our classroom are the books that I have purchased.

This means that not all my students are able to read them every day. Please help me engage my students with colorful pictures and fun to read books that are many of our old favorites!
