My Students

Our students come from a wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Some know four languages. Some have learning disabilities that effect speech and language, fine and gross motor, and social-emotional abilities. All have diverse learning experiences and the teachers on our grade want to ensure that they ALL have equal access to learning basic concepts in literacy, science, writing, and other academic areas. We want them to ask questions, ones that lead to more questions to make them explore and wonder, and grow as learners.

Through project-based learning, and scientific inquiry, students will be encouraged to ask questions, research through reading and observation to find answers, and social skills will be developed via collaborative exploration.

Whether as part of informational and fact vs. opinion modules of study or as books for independent reading, having sufficient, diverse kinds of materials present opportunities both for independence and for collaboration.

My Project

As we launch our new unit of study, our grade needs books of various levels to make biographies accessible to all of our students.

Our students are eager to learn about inventors, explorers, and artists, and need solid texts to help them ask and answer questions about topics they wish to share with others.

They will work collaboratively and compare and contrast texts, using text features to define new words as they delve into research. Having a variety of texts available on given topics would lend itself to better engagement, better research and overall excellent prerequisite skills for future genre.
