My Students

My students are from rural Utah. These students are excited about school and want to be successful. It is important for students in early grades to create a strong foundation.

Our school is focused on the core subjects (reading, writing, science and math) this school year.

We want to ensure that students are making a full year of growth. As a school, we work hard to provide an appropriate environment for our students and teach them the skills they will need later in life.

My Project

These supplies will allow us to learn about our environment, and how to conserve our resources. Our unit will begin by reading The Hobbit during reading time. There is a companion book called "Be a Hobbit, Save the Earth."

Using the students' interest in The Hobbit movie, we will transition into learning about the environment using a fictional place (The Shire).

The students will compare their environment to the fictional one. We will specifically look at using less plastic. The students will compare using a metal container, silicone food wraps, and Beeswax wraps. They will gather data, and report which one is the best substitute for Ziplock bags. They will plant their seeds, and monitor for 4 weeks.

Self-sufficiency in 21st Century, Backyard Homesteader, and Self-sufficient Life books will allow students to research a home project to demonstrate what they have learned. These books will be used for ideas. In our rural area, most families own farms. This final project will be as real-world as possible. The students must present their findings with the class.

As a review of the unit, the students will divide into groups, and watch the Disney Nature movies. They will create a flyer to explain why it is important to conserve our environment.
