Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach second grade in Brooklyn, New York. About ninety-five percent of the students receive free lunch and many are English Language Learners. The majority of our day is devoted to literacy, which means that science is not as much of a focus as I would like it to be. Another problem is that I do not have many of the books and supplies necessary to give my students hands-on experiences.
I am asking you to help my students by generously providing funding to purchase a wide variety of materials to teach my students about the habitat of a pond. These materials include big books for a reading experience all students can take part in and books that students can enjoy on their own (and with partners) that teach them about ponds and the plants and animals that live in them.
The materials I am requesting also include large models of the life cycle of frogs that my students can study up close as well as a frog hatchery kit that includes tadpoles that my students can raise. Some other materials include read alongs, educational videos, and several science investigation kits that will allow my students to gain more information about the pond habitat.
These science materials will allow me to share the excitement of hands-on science with my students. They will also provide books that my students can read during our literacy time. This means that I will be able to integrate what we are learning in science into our learning during the rest of the day.
