Help Us Learn About Lions, Tigers, And Bears, Oh My!

My students need high interest National Geographic Readers books, other animal books, and drawing books about different animals in order to complete their animal reports.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Books about animals can provide many things for my students. They can allow my students to practice and improve their nonfiction reading skills. They can also provide information, drawing directions, and real photographs of their favorite animals.

I have a wonderful class of second graders.

Our school is located in a high immigrant, low income community in California. The parents of most of my students never finished high school. Many of my students will be the first ones in the family to finish high school and hopefully college too. Most of my students are English learners. I have several students with learning disabilities too. I also mainstream learning disabled and hard of hearing students into my all inclusive classroom.

In addition, I partner for enrichment activities with a 3rd grade class and a class of deaf and hard of hearing students who will also participate in this project.

My Project

I am asking for 21 National Geographic Readers animal books, an Animal Opposites pop-up book, 7 books about animal camouflage, and 4 drawing books. These books will be used to allow my second grade students to complete an animal report and a realistic drawing that will be part of our science and Language Arts curriculum. They will also be used to help my students improve their reading skills.

My students are beginning a science unit on animal life cycles and a Language Arts unit on animal camouflage.

As part of these units, they will each get to choose an animal to learn about and complete an animal report. They will also learn how to draw their animal. The drawing books will be used to help the students with their drawings. These books will enrich my science and literature units.

This project will allow my students to use high interest books to learn information about their favorite animals and they will learn how to draw the animal too.

This project will enable my students to go beyond just reading about animals in their textbooks. These supplies will enrich my curriculum and allow my students to become excited about what they are learning!
