"To read is to fly; it is to soar to a point of vantage which gives a view over wide terrains. . ."- A C Grayling. Many kids are afraid to take the leap needed to begin this flight, because they haven't learned to enjoy reading. Technology is a great way to help them take a leap into learning.
We are a school made up of several farming communities in rural America.
We have a high rate of low income students. Many of these students move often from school to school. We also have a high population of special education students, with 16% of our district student population needing some form of special education. My classroom serves our Kindergarten - third grade students with special needs.
My Project
The Leapfrog Tag system intrigues the students and leads them to open the book to see what's inside. This system can read the book to the students, so that they can hear the story read fluently. It also encourages the students to read the story to themselves and helps them by reading individual words that they may not know. It has activities that encourage the students to look around the book to learn important parts of a book and gives information about with is being read. Additionally, some books also work on specific phonics skills and can to used to supplement the reading curriculum. These books can be used during independent reading time or as center activities.
Because we are a low income school, many of our students don't have access to fun technology-based reading activities. The Tag Learning system is a great opportunity to engage my students and encourage them to read.
Many of the students that attend my classes have struggled with reading.
Reading has been a source of frustration and difficulty for them. It is important that I, not only teach them strategies to help them be more successful at reading, but also to teach them the joy of reading. Using the Tag System will help students to learn that reading is fun, which will encourage them to read more. My hope is that as they learn to enjoy reading, they will be more likely to Leap into Learning.
