I tell my students that, just as a person who plays basketball everyday becomes a better basketball player, a person who reads everyday becomes a better reader. My past experience has shown that kids who read every day make huge reading gains by the end of the year. The main way in which I can encourage my students to read a lot is to provide them with books that they will love. While I taught at my Teach for America placement school, I purchased novels for my students on a weekly basis. I invested a great deal of money in my classroom library because I knew that the kids wouldn't read if they didn't like the books.
I am now teaching 7th grade English at KIPP STAR College Prep Charter School, which is located in Harlem. Eighty-six percent of our students receive free or reduced price lunches. At KIPP STAR, students attend school from 7:15 until 5 pm Monday through Friday. They also attend school every other Saturday and during the summer. These extended school hours are part of our effort to do whatever it takes to allow students to climb the mountain to college.
I brought many of my books with me, but my students' favorite ones are falling apart. The bindings are broken and the pages are falling out because they have been read so many times. By funding this proposal you will be helping to provide my students with interesting and challanging books by authors like Walter Dean Myers, Jacqueline Woodson, and SE Hinton.
