Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am requesting a vacuum cleaner, mop and bucket, four brooms and six sets of dustpans and brushes to help keep our classroom sparkling clean!
I teach first grade in the Bronx. As with all elementary classrooms in the city, we spend a lot of time meeting on the rug in the middle of our room. We sit on it, we jump on it, we lie on it and we occasionally take naps on it. However, for lack of vacuum cleaner, it is not often cleaned. Due to a technicality in the contract of our custodial staff do not vacuum the rug either, and so over the year it becomes less and less pleasant or safe to be on the rug.
In my first year of teaching my students and I encountered many "icky things." Among them rodent droppings, dead roaches and dog excrement from our playground. Without the appropriate cleaning supplies to remove these hazards, we often rolled up the rug and sat on the floor, or cancelled our meeting time altogether. Meeting time is very important for such young students to develop their social skills. However, endangering their health and welfare is much more important.
If I had a vacuum cleaner I could at least keep the dust to a minimum. If I had brooms and brushes then my students could also take part in the cleaning process and participate in keeping our space clean and healthy. The mop and bucket will be reserved for bigger messes but is just as important. Please help us start the year clean, safe and ready to go!
