Help Us Increase Our Language and Social Emotional Skills!
Help me give my students a toy kitchen and play foods to increase their language production, and social emotional activities to help them become more comfortable with the changes around them.
I am a speech-language pathologist at an elementary school in East New York, Brooklyn. A neighborhood in which research has shown around 24% of the children live in poverty. I usually service anywhere from 35-50 students in 3-K through 5th grade, who all have an Individualized Education Program (IEP).
My students tend to have one or more disabilities (cognitive and/or physical); however, they are all excited to come to their speech sessions to learn and excel.
Many of them have challenges at school and beyond, but they come to their sessions willingly because we discuss their goals, the steps necessary for success and how we, as a team, will achieve success.
My Project
Many of my younger students exhibit very limited lexicons. Pretend play is a great way to increase vocabulary, make real-world connections, and foster appropriate social skills.
Things have changed drastically due to Covid-19, both at school and the world around us in general.
I would appreciate your help to be able to engage my students in as many social-emotional activities as possible.
I would like to give them the vocabulary and outlet to express their feelings. So, if necessary, I could guide them in the right direction to be able to deal with what has happened since March of 2020 (full school lockdown) and adjust to the new normal.
