My fourth grade classroom is full of energetic nine year olds who are eager to learn and conquer all.
They are smart and super friendly, sometimes a bit much. Once you get to know them, they'll steal your heart! We are a small school community so most of the kids have been together since kindergarten. It’s amazing to see how much they love and care for one another. Empathy in our classroom is palpable the minute anyone walks in.
Our class is made up of many English learners, students with special needs, and students at all different academic levels. Nonetheless, they're enthusiastic about learning, they're humorous, and every day they show how resilient they are regardless of their individual situation. These are the things that make our kids special!
Unfortunately, most of my students come from low income families who hardly make ends meet, so it's practically impossible for our families to contribute much to everything my students need to have a successful school year.
My Project
Help me give my student a bluetooth speaker to use with our Smartboard. The Smartboard has built-in speakers but it's so outdated that we can hardly hear the sound. We use technology every day in our classroom. I usually like to start the day off by having the students work on the problem of the day. Then, I like showing them videos on how to solve these problems in different ways. So a new speaker will be a blessing.
In addition to that, our new science curriculum and math curriculum use videos to help teach different skills.
Without being able to hear what the people on the videos are saying, my students are at a disadvantage.
For example, in reading, I use videos to introduce the unit. These help the students to focus on what essential questions they will be working on in the upcoming month. I also like to use videos such as BrainPop Jr. to review skills. During our math instruction, I use videos from EngageNY to review concepts or play music to help them learn a skill.
