My students need gardening tools and puzzles and books that we can use to further our gardening discussion to teach our students where our food comes from and how it grows.
As a teacher of students in low income/single-parent family homes, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities.
They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention.
Many are students with a range of disabilities, emotional disturbance and specific learning disability. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may deprive them of life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
Planning a garden, planting the seeds and watching them grow give kids a sense of purpose and responsibility. Furthermore, studies show that when children have contact with soil during activities like digging and planting, they have improved moods, better learning experiences and decreased anxiety.
Your generous donation to our project will improve our Pre-K classroom by providing my students to be more self sufficient and learn about the environment.
When children participate in gardening, the fruits and vegetables that they are inspired to eat will no doubt have a positive effect on their body. But the act of gardening itself can also promote a healthy body. Kids LOVE to get their hands and feet in the dirt.
