My students need a document camera to help learn about literacy.
"Today a reader, tomorrow a leader." Margaret Fuller My students love to read. They ask to read throughout the day, during computer lab, during their free time, and even during recess. Reading brings them joy and will ultimately bring them boundless opportunity.
My school is located in a low-income neighborhood in Oakland.
About two-thirds of students are Latino, 13% are African-American, and the remainder are Asian-American, white, or multi-ethnic. Ninety-five percent of students qualify for the free/reduced lunch program for low-income children. My school has received multiple awards and honors, including the California Distinguished School Award. We are committed to giving all students an equal opportunity to attend college and pursue their dreams. We pursue this goal by teaching students about college, holding high expectations for all students, developing strong community and family partnerships, and ensuring ongoing professional development and collaboration among staff.
This document camera will be a invaluable tool in "growing our reading brains," as my students and I describe it. Many of my students are still learning strategies for decoding tricky words. Others need to work on utilizing reading comprehension skills. With a document camera, I will be able to project a book on the board, so I can model reading strategies and engage students in practicing those strategies as a class, before they open a book on their level and try the strategy themselves. I will be able to project word problems during math so students can read along with me, and I will be able to project pictures and sentence frames during English language development to help my bilingual students grow their English brains.
The possibilities are endless.
A document camera can serve as a window to another a world, from the deep ocean in a book about sharks to a world where orphans encounter a series of unfortunate events. It will help ensure my students continue to grow their reading brains and sustain their love of reading for many years to come.Read More
