Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a place where adversity is met with creativity. My students are fortunate to be members of a community that wants to provide access to interesting and engaging experiences. It is my personal mission to give my students the chance to show the world what we are doing by documenting it.
My students all have a unique story to tell.
Many of my students come from low-income areas of New York City, and many of them were born or have parents who were born in other countries around the world; Mexico, Yemen, China, Uzbekistan, Ecuador. My students are unique in so many ways, which I see as an asset to our classroom. My students come to school each day having a wide breadth of academic, language, learning and emotional needs.
My co-teachers and I try to give these students an experience that is rather unique in a place like NYC. Whether it be involving them in the local community, using new technologies like 3D printing, or having a guest speaker such as a scientist, farmer, or designer, my team tries to consistently provide highly valuable, educational experiences for our students.
My Project
My students will use the goPro to document all of the amazing things they do in school. They will bring the goPro on trips, documenting their involvement in the local community and beyond. They will use it in the classroom to show the community, their parents, and the world the innovative work that they are a part of. They will use the footage they collect to edit and create video products that they will showcase to the school community.
This project will allow for my students to make their learning visible.
It will help them to build the skill of reflecting on the meaning of their work within the community and the message that can be sent with a simple documentary. This technology will add a great deal of excitement to the process of learning and help us to gain access to future grant opportunities to come!
