My students need new laptops. Currently we only have a desktop available for research and creating projects. These laptops will enable my students to engage in true STEM curriculum.
My students are English Language Learners that are deaf and hard of hearing from low socio-economic backgrounds in New York City. Many of them have to endure a 2 hour bus ride to participate in our specialized education program. Despite all they have to overcome, with grateful hearts and hungry minds, my students enter the classroom ready to learn.
Science enables my students explore their world through hands-on activities and inquiry.
When they are engaged in lessons that matter to them, they are able to further develop their cognitive and linguistics skills. Over the past year my students have been learning to appropriately utilize the internet as a source for conducting research for science projects. They also have been using power point software to create presentations for various science projects. The use of technology has made it possible for my students to explore their world and express their ideas.
My Project
It is projected that jobs in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) will continue to grow by the time my students have graduated high school. By having technology that is both available and current, my students will have the chance to enter those fields as adults. These laptops will be used for my students to conduct research, and collaborate with students from other schools in the area of science. My students can access software that they could not on our old desktop. These laptops are not just tools for research, they are a gateway for opportunity. They already have the eagerness and drive, now they need the materials.
