My Students

Whir, whir, squeak. Grind, grind, grind! Rats! It's still not sharp. Such is the life of a fifth grader trying to sharpen a pencil with a worn out electric pencil sharpener, or worse a wall-mounted manual sharpener which has seen better days. All they want is a pointed pencil.

I teach in a public school in an urban district in Upstate New York where many students cannot afford to pay for their lunches, let alone school supplies.

Approximately 90% of the students in my school are eligible for a free or reduced lunch, and everyone receives a free breakfast. I provide a lot of what they need out of my own pocket.

My Project

I teach English Language Arts to my fifth grade homeroom and Math to both my homeroom and one other fifth grade class. My rule is that they must do math in pencil and only pencil. Our problem is that it's not that easy to get one sharpened. Our sharpeners are old and worn out! We are in desperate need of a couple of quality electric sharpeners so we can get our pencils pointed quickly and with little time wasted waiting in line. Two in the room will reduce the lines of students needing to "get to the point"!

A pack of brand new pencils is like my students in many ways.

They are full of promise and potential. But unlike my students, pencils don't come into my classroom sharp and ready to work. Please help my students sharpen their pencils, so I can help sharpen their minds.
