I am a second-year teacher in District 75, New York City's special education district for students with severe disabilities. I am fortunate enough to be working with the same group of third-fifth grade students with autism I worked with last year, and have had the opportunity to watch many of them advance their math and literacy skills. I also try to make time in the short school day for art projects, music and movement activities, social studies, and geography lessons. But one subject that has been sorely lacking in my classroom is science. I love science and have taught such topics as the basics of the life cycle, but since most of my school's classes consist of low-functioning special education students whose goals are mostly everyday life skills, we do not have many science materials. Although my students perform below grade level, they have amazed me with their ability to learn when presented with exciting new material in an exciting new way! We not only need books and workbooks, but some hands-on equipment to be able to perform simple experiments. It would be a tragedy for them to get through school without much science knowledge simply because we lacked the appropriate materials. I am requesting a donation to purchase a science photo library and a set of eight science activity tubs from Lakeshore Learning that cover such topics as weather, insects, and the solar system. (Students with autism, even more so than most students, learn best from hands-on and visual materials.) Please help us get our hands dirty! Thank you.
