"My heart is singing this morning. A miracle has happened! The light of understanding has shone upon my little pupil's mind, and behold, all things have changed!"
Anne Sullivan (teacher of Helen Keller)
Please help us to make some more miracles.
My colleague and I work with elementary school children (Preschool to 5th grade) that have a wide variety of language learning disabilities and speech sound disorders.
Our school is located in a high poverty area.
Where other schools get funding from the community to help compensate for the State and Federal cuts to education, our community just doesn't have the means to support the school as much as they would like.
My Project
Our students struggle so much in school. From a much too early age, they begin to hate school because they feel that they "can't do it". Having fun and interesting materials to help them learn and practice speech/language skills that will help them to succeed in school is vital.
The Sentence Factory Game will help our students learn to answer WH questions and to build grammatically correct sentences. They will understand WH questions better; they will write better sentences and essays; they will be able to speak more clearly. They will learn to be more effective communicators, overall.
The Articulation Cards will make speech sound work more fun! Error sound productions are basically poor oral movement habits that get stuck. So, kids need to practice, practice, practice. Fun games and picture cards help to keep it fresh!
Language Impaired kids have trouble telling stories. Story retelling helps to improve reading comprehension and writing skills.
Our students need all the help they can get.
Some of them have so much stacked against them, it's ridiculous.
This project will help us to buy some high interest materials and books to help our students learn and practice essential speech and language skills.
