Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very inspired by technology and love using it as a medium for learning. We need just a few more things to make using our classroom computers more comfortable for everyone.
I teach an amazing group of 26 curious bilingual 5th grade students in Texas.
My students are in the midst of a very challenging school year. They are now in their final year at an elementary school where more than 90% of students receive free or reduced lunch, which also means that my bilingual students are in the last year of their transitional bilingual program. Thus, this is the first year they are receiving classroom instruction entirely in English. It is challenging enough for my students to make the annual progress required to pass their high stakes exams in the spring and move onto middle school, without also having to achieve a level of English that is sufficient to pass the high stakes test for the first time in English!
My Project
My classroom just received two brand-new student computers. We are so lucky to have received these amazing resources and the students love using them for online-learning activities. Unfortunately, my classroom only has three Ethernet ports. We still have the two older student computers that can be used for some simple online tasks, but they cannot even be turned on without access to the district network. We need a simple ethernet switch to make full use of our computing power!
The students are able to learn so quickly with the many educational and interactive online learning sites available.
These sites are often fully interactive with animation and sound. Currently, these sounds are often turned off so that other students are not interrupted. Having enough headphones for everybody who is participating would end this problem and allow the students to fully enjoy their online learning activities.
