My kindergarteners are energetic, deeply curious, bright, emotional, and eager to become more independent with every passing day. Our school is located in the West Chesterfield / Chatham neighborhood on the Far South Side of Chicago. Although the school is majority low-income and faces financial challenges associated with belonging to a large, urban school-district like CPS, the teachers, administrators, staff, and families at the school work tirelessly to provide an enriching, safe, and high-quality education.
Although I have only been with my kindergarteners since mid-year, I have gotten to know them individually and as a group.
They enjoy hands-on experiences, out-of-school learning trips, asking questions, and showing their developing independence.
My Project
Students gather on the rug frequently for mini lessons and other forms of instruction. Although we have a SMARTBoard, I still believe it is important to have a center piece to record thoughts about books, model writing on real paper, and co-constrict posters to solidify our collaborative learning.
Currently, I am using an old ‘easel’ left over from previous teachers when I arrived in the classroom.
It is missing some critical components and is damaged/old, and so it is time for a new one. We use the easel everyday often so we are hoping to be able to get one!
