My Project

The last required text my students have to read this year is “I Know Why the Cages Birds Sing” by Maya Angelou. This is an important work of literature, but popular and frequently checked out (or missing) from area libraries. Of course, it's in local bookstores, but many of my students' families don't have it in their budget to purchase their own copies. Meanwhile, reading the book in PDF form is not ideal for high schoolers who need to be able to be able to move around the text, flipping seamlessly through different sections as they read, annotate, and do their literary analysis writing assignments. It would be really helpful if I could provide them paperback copies to use in class, so they have no excuse to avoid engaging closely with the text.

Angelou's seminal memoir touches on survival of trauma, finding one's voice, and becoming a force of empowerment.

It is a beautiful, true story about a phenomenal woman, author, and speaker who is also a role model. I believe my young scholars will benefit greatly from their experience with this book, and having copies on hand to share with them will make it easier to help the students read it communally, closely, and comprehendingly. For these reasons I'm asking you to help me expedite getting a classroom set of “I Know Why the Cages Birds Sing” for my students.
