My students need calming supplies such as chair kickbands, headphones and social skills books to help them learn to self-regulate within the classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My class is a self-contained special education classroom within one of the lowest socioeconomic elementary schools in our area. We live in a military community which means many of these kids have moved several times and endure frequent separations from their families.
My class is the only one of its kind in our district--every student placed with me has been unsuccessful in their home school due to extreme emotional and behavioral disabilities.
Despite the challenges that my students face, they are amazing kids! They are fun-loving, strong and eager to learn. We have built our classroom from scratch this year and are working to make it a welcoming place for my kiddos to progress and meet their goals!
My Project
I have spent hundreds of dollars on my classroom because it was virtually empty of everything except desks and chairs when the school year began. We have tried several items (such as yoga balls and stools) to help my students focus but unfortunately, those were too distracting for my emotional-behavior kiddos. My class is lucky to have enough iPads for every student but the headphones I originally bought my kids are nearly all broken and we are just now halfway through the year!
I have spent a lot of time researching the items I think will best help my unique students focus in their busy environment.
We are requesting sets of sturdy headphones so each student can have their own individual pair. This will allow for small group instruction with staff to continue while other students work independently on their iPads. Bouncy bands and balance boards will give sensory opportunities to all my students without distracting their peers. We are also wanting to get some new social skills books to use during our daily social skills time.
We can't wait to be able to get our new materials and put them to use in our classroom!
