My students attend a large elementary school, with a student population of roughly 615 students in kindergarten through fifth grade. They love performing music, composing music, and moving to music.
My students are active musicians who play instruments, sing, and dance in music class.
They light up as they gain musical skills and knowledge. My students exude energy and excitement when they apply those skills and that knowledge to compose rhythm compositions and songs. The more hands-on experiences students have, the better equipped they are to express themselves through their musical compositions and performances and to become lifelong musicians.
My Project
The singing voice is one of the main skills the youngest music students are working to develop. It is foundational whether they grow up to sing along to music in the car with friends, sing in a professional ensemble, or sing to any future children they may have.
Manipulatives can make the challenge of finding one's singing voice fun instead of nerve wracking.
Singing alone is vital to developing one's singing voice. We currently have some animal finger puppets students use in class. Even some of the most hesitant solo singers are not only enthusiastic solo singers when it is their finger puppet singing, but they will also sing for a longer time and show much creativity in what they sing. Human finger puppets would provide some variety to this experience and help keep students engaged with their singing. A puppet with a specific role in the community can be a great jumping off point for students to improvise singing stories. On the flipside, having googly eye finger puppets can provide students with a limitless number of topics they can sing about - something that will help some students thrive. We will need storage for both human finger puppets and googly eye puppets.
In addition to singing alone, students also need to isolate their voice to differentiate it from their classmates' voices. Whisper phones will help students focus on their own voices to figure out if they are using their singing voice or speaking voice. This will greatly help with vocal development. Finally, once COVID has subsided we can use the stretch tubes for students to provide helpful feedback to each other. One student can sing while the other listens just to their partner. Storage will also be needed for these items.
