This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My class is composed of 55 fifth graders in a general education class, with students with IEPs, ELL learners, and students with disorders, such as autism.

A typical day in my classroom looks active.

My students are engaged in learning activities that get them moving, talking to their peers, and asking great questions. You will not see a lot of worksheets in my classroom. My students are learning through hands-on experiences.

I teach in a Title I school.

My fifth-grade students come from very diverse families. I am excited to share that my school is a genuinely diverse community. Not only do students come from varying ethnic backgrounds and places, but the life experiences that they’ve had are incredibly unique. My scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of excitement!

My students are 9 and 10-year children that love coming to school. When school was closed in the spring of 2020, due to the pandemic, not only were the kids wanting to come back, but we missed seeing their smiling faces every day.

My Project

With your help, I will be able to provide my students with the tools they need in order to learn coping skills and social-emotional learning. My students need social-emotional skills to be successful at school, at home, and for the rest of their lives. The use of books, pencils, sensory tools, crayons, colored pencils, and iPad will help them learn these skills. Students will be able to use journal writing, use read alouds, and many more activities.

These are the skills that help kids build confidence, understand their own strengths and weaknesses, collaborate with others, navigate social situations, develop strong relationships, and make better decisions.

Without a doubt, these are critical skills for all learners.

Books such as Marvin's Monster Diary, Displacement, A Little Spot books, and many more books will also be used. While reading, we will spend time talking about how some of the characters might think and feel. We will use this time to highlight that this is perspective-taking, a skill we use to understand others’ emotions and thoughts.

In addition to this, I am asking for a variety of materials they we will use to incorporate art activities. Art can be a powerful way to target social and emotional skills. Creating a self-collage can help my students develop better self-awareness about who they are. Painting and drawing can serve as positive coping strategies to manage stress.

With the iPad and fidget toys, students will be able to use a designated area where they can take a break to use applications to write and draw their emotions. Using mindfulness apps, such as Positive Penguins and GoNoodle, in the classroom can help teach my students how to calm down before a big test, manage their emotions when they are upset, and just feel happier at the moment.
