Chemistry is one of the science electives in high school that students can choose from. It provides students the foundational knowledge in life sciences, technology, and industry. Specific STEM careers are in Chemistry or with a Chemistry background. Some research says that there is a decline in students taking Chemistry, and to enhance students' interest, we as educators should make the lesson relevant to students. According to Sears and Kessen (1964), in the context of the AAAS Commission on Science Education, wrote that: “The first task and central purpose of science education is to awaken in the child, whether or not [he] will become a professional scientist, a sense of the joy, the excitement, and intellectual power of science.”
This project will expose my chemistry students to the structure and process of science by providing various fun-filled, hands-on activities.
To awaken my students' interest in Chemistry, the Organic Chemistry Model kits will scaffold the chemistry learning for organic, inorganic, and functional groups. The kits will help them visualize the chemical bonding. The Clean Water Science desalination kit will demonstrate the scientific way to extract salt from seawater. My students will learn the science of cleaning and reusing dirty water by conducting interesting water purification experiments. The lessons will help them bridge the theories and practice while collaborating with their learning partners and understanding the chemistry concepts behind the different phenomena.
