Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a high poverty elementary school with close to one thousand students that is located in a neighborhood that is settled in the middle of an industrial area. Aside from all of the trucks that rumble by, there is a high rate of crime in the surrounding area. All of the students receive a free lunch because of their socio-economic status. My students are faced with several challenges, both in and out of the classroom. They all are English Language Learners and many of them have learning disabilities. Despite the many challenges they face, they are always ready to learn, especially if I provide them with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
Seeing the excitement in kids' eyes when they learn something new makes teaching the best job ever.
My students need as many hands-on experiences as possible in school, to enhance and reinforce their learning.
My Project
My students are in the process of learning how to build robots for competition. Through a lot of trial and error, we have found that we are missing pieces to make our robots effective. These kits will allow us to create better robots that will be able to perform more tasks than they are able to perform now.
Watching my students improve their communication skills through cooperative learning has been priceless.
My students are learning how to give and receive constructive criticism. It is amazing to see how much they can accomplish when given the opportunity to create solutions to their problems on their own.
